Bush Adviser Says Its Worth Looking at the Draft

WASHINGTON - Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to a military draft, President Bush's new war adviser said Friday.

"I think it makes sense to certainly consider it," Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio's "All Things Considered."

"And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.

Oh goodie!! Things might be heating up soon. For as long as Bush's illegal occupation of Iraqnam has been underway I have thought that the only way to bring it to an end would be to reinstate the draft. The presence of the draft and more importantly the specter of being drafted and sent to Nam was one of the big driving factors in helping bring an end to that American military mistake. Reinstating it now would have much the same effect.

I vividly remember entering the Selective Service Office in Rice Lake Wisconsin on October 31, 1969 where I signed up for the draft. Like Dick Cheney I had a 2-S (student)deferment and as long as I kept my grades acceptable I had little to worry about as far as having to go to Nam. I kept my draft card with me at all times until May 5, 1970, the day after the murders at Kent State University when I sat in the Student Union of the the University of Wisconsin River Falls and with several of my friends we torched our draft card out of disgust for what was happening. Making that decision was a huge part of growing up.

If the draft is reinstated to feed bodies into Bush's war machine in Iraqnam there should be no deferments. None. No reason. No matter what. No amount of money. Nothing. Too bad if Daddy is a Congressman from Texas, your ass is going in the Army just like a kid named Ronnie the Redneck from East Cornfield Missouri.

A certain way to jolt the United States out of its collective lethargy is to bring back the draft. If you want to see the Iraq war come to a screeching halt over night, just draft the Bush twins and the children of every war mongering Repignican Congressman and Senator on Capitol Hill. Do that. Have them live under the fear and threat of being shipped off to be cannon fodder and the "war" will be over by Friday.

Lets see how tough Bush is and how quick he is to say "bring em on" when Jenna and First Barbie are sitting on a C-5 transport at Andrews AFB Maryland waiting their turn to die for the same unidentifiable "noble cause" that Casey Sheehan died for.
