Same Headline Different War

Remember back in the days of the Vietnam War when each Tuesday we would get the weekly casualty figures from the previous week? They would always be something like "100 Americans killed in action; 250 Americans taken as prisoners; 50,000 Vietcong killed."

Something like that. All designed to persuade us that we were making such great progress in Vietnam because we were killing a bazillion times more Viet Cong than they were killing Americans.

Well, that tradition lives on in the Iraqnam war. Just check out this headline.

From this story we are to believe that we are making "progress" in Iraqnam because we killed 32 of "them"

BAGHDAD - U.S.-led forces swooped into the Shiite militia stronghold of Sadr City on Wednesday, killing 32 suspected militants and detaining 12 others in fighting and an airstrike targeting alleged smuggling networks from Iran.

Iraqi police and witnesses said nine civilians were killed in the attack, which occurred hours before Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki arrived in Tehran for his second visit in less than a year.

And of course this story has the requisite line about Iran being involved.

Its unfortunate that the American public has virtually no grasp of history or it refuses to remember the mistakes from the past. However its all immaterial because King George says we're making progress so we must be. We were threatened by Saddam's weapons of mass deception also.
