Senator John Warner (R-VA) Calls For Troop Drawdown

In a move that must be totally related to his upcoming attempt to be re-elected in 2008, Virginia Senator John Warner today called for the re-deployment of up to 5,000 troops from Iraqnam. The Senator, obviously scared shitless about his political future, sheepishly stated to the 'president' that it should be at his discretion.
WASHINGTON - Virginia Sen. John Warner, a pivotal voice in the Senate on military affairs, plans to hold a news conference this afternoon to talk about his recent trip to Iraq.

The Republican centrist, who spent two days in Iraq last week, offered a gloomy assessment of the war in a written statement, saying he was ``not optimistic" that the Iraqi government could reach a political settlement to end the conflict. But he has declined interview requests.

Warner planned to meet with White House officials this morning before speaking publicly about the war at an afternoon press conference at the Capitol.

Frustrated with the lack of political progress in Iraq, Warner said it is time to put some “meaningful teeth” into Bush’s claim that the U.S. commitment to Iraq “is not open-ended.” Warner said he is calling on President Bush to announce on Sept. 15 that he will “initiate the first step in a withdrawal”:

I say to the President, respectfully, pick whatever number you wish. You do not want to lose the momentum. But certainly, in the 160,000 plus — say 5,000 — could begin to redeploy and be home to their families and loved ones no later than Christmas of this year.

Note to Senator Warner from Craig:
Bush is not going to draw down troops until next spring when deployment realities absolutely force him into it. But don’t worry about it Senator, several thousand troops will be sent home before Christmas. Unfortunetly, some of them will be missing limbs, or be suffering brain truama; the rest will land at Dover Air Force Base Delaware and they will be riding in a casket.

So sad, but so true.
