The Politics of Groundhog Day

Today, February 2, is Groundhog Day. Its a day that put a tiny town in central Pennsylvania on the map, and a day that made Bill Murray a lot of money from a movie with a similar name.

According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

Groundhog Day 2008 has a potentially more important meaning. This year, if Phil sees his shadow not only will there be six more weeks of winter, but also 352 more days of the Bush Administration. However, if Phil doesn't see his shadow, there will an early departure of Bush and Cheney from the White House.

I'm hoping its cloudy as hell in Punxsutawney today.
