Many Americans Take No Vacation Time

This is a revolting story from this morning's Yahoo.com news.

A recent study by Orbitz, the online travel company, found a drop in the number of people taking three-week or two-week vacations and an increase in those taking a week or less. One-third of respondents said they took five or fewer days of vacation in the past year.

The really depressing finding in the study was this:

One in four of those surveyed said they felt their bosses did not encourage them to take vacations, and one in three said they stayed connected with their office via phone or computer while on holiday.

Unfortunately these people haven't figured out that once they are dead, all of that dedication to every aspect of their office life will not mean squat, and nobody in their office will care that they busted their ass like they did.

Jimmy Buffett has already addressed this issue in his fantastic song "Holiday"

The most important verse in this song goes:

Disregard confession
Stop trying to make impressions
on your corporate climb
It might come as quite a shock
but you can't really own that rock
it's just a waste of time

So, take a holiday
you need a holiday
find a place to find yourself
take your life down off that shelf
quit acting so blase

In a few short days I'm going to blow off 30 years with the Federal government and go on a permanent vacation. When I do I plan to follow the song line in Fred Neal's classic song "Everybody's Talking" and "go where the weather suits my clothes."

More people need to spend more time in the Caribbean, mon, where you learn whats really important and whats really important there is that you aren't here.
