POLITICS: Alaska lawmaker receives 5-year sentence
A federal judge sentenced former Alaska state Rep. Tom Anderson (R) to five years in prison for seven felonies involving corruption while in office.Once again the gentleman from Alaska who will be the next Ted Stevens is sitting at home with his anal pucker factor in the stratosphere after this court ruling.
U.S. District Judge John Sedwick said Anderson "sold the public trust" through his money laundering, extortion and bribery activities.
"He took the money because he wanted the money," Sedwick said. "I have a very considerable concern for sending a message to the community that we can't tolerate this kind of behavior" (Lisa Demer, Anchorage Daily News, Oct. 15).
In December 2006, the FBI arrested Anderson on a federal bribery warrant.
He was found guilty of seven felonies in U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska in July of this year. He was the first Alaska legislator convicted in a scandal that has investigated the possibility that other representatives took bribes from VECO as well, including former Alaska House Speaker Pete Kott (R) and Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (R) (Greenwire, May 8). -- KB
