6100 Trucks Stranded in Andean Snowstorm

This is a fantastic story about a huge number of trucks being stranded at the base of Anconcagua in the Andes Mountains following a recent snow storm. Anconcagua is the second highest mountain (after McKinley in Alaska) in the Western Hemisphere.

I flew by the peak of Anconcagua when our flight to Santiago Chile was diverted to Mendoza, Argentina because of low fuel and a fogged in Santiago runway. I was afforded a fantastic view of the mountain at almost eye level. Several days later I drove to Christ the Redeemer pass mentioned in this story looking for birds. Its not difficult to imagine the chaos the truck drivers must be experiencing being stranded on that road. At least if the snow storm has passed and they can see the fantastic mountain they may be getting some benefit from their misfortune.
