This excellent piece from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review does such a perfect job of describing what it really means to be a Parrothead that I'm providing a link to it for all fellow Parrotheads to enjoy. The story ends with some essential Parrothead trivia (including a couple things even I didn't know!).
This sentence sums up the story perfectly -
"If you are a true Parrothead and you listen to the lyrics, it's about escape," says Cook, 46, of Allison Park.
Its not about the booze....its about being taken to a place you would really rather be, and Captain Buffett is at the controls of the pirate ship when you go there.
