Democrats Strike Deal With NRA on Gun Control Legislation

This is a very interesting story because before today I didn't realize that the National Rifle Association was made up of officials elected by the public with whom Democrats or anyone else would be making a "deal" to get legislation passed.

When I was a kid my dad was a loyal member of the National Rifle Association, inhaling the information in each of their American Rifleman magazines every time it darkened our mailbox. I remember reading it in those days also and found myself amazed, as a teen, that according to the NRA there was someone (probably a communist) hiding behind every tree in American just begging for the opportunity to take away my guns.

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees that A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Dictionary.com defines militia as:

mi·li·tia /mɪˈlɪʃə/ –noun
1. a body of citizens enrolled for military service, and called out periodically for drill but serving full time only in emergencies.
2. a body of citizen soldiers as distinguished from professional soldiers.
3. all able-bodied males considered by law eligible for military service.
4. a body of citizens organized in a paramilitary group and typically regarding themselves as defenders of individual rights against the presumed interference of the federal government.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Origin: 1580–90; < L mīlitia soldiery, equiv. to mīlit- (s. of mīles) soldier + -ia -ia]

NOWHERE in that definition does it say that drug dealers at the corner of 14th and K Streets NW in Washington DC have a right to possess a machine gun. Or does it say that I have a right to possess a shotgun for duck hunting purposes (which I used to do). What the Second Amendment says is that the National Guard (most of whom are now in Iraq unfortunately) shall be a well armed militia and that there is no way that the the National Guard shall not have guns.

And now we are making "deals" with the chief supporters of drug dealers at 14th and K being allowed to keep their machine guns that the National Rifle Association calls "sporting rifles."

Each time I drive west of DC on Interstate 66 I pass the world headquarters of the National Rifle Association. Each time I pass it I give it the finger. This "deal" is another reason to continue along that path.
