Climate Change Causing Chinese Wetlands to Disappear
Today we have even more depressing news about the effects of climate change on earth's natural resources and ultimately on you and me.
These words should be enough to make any cynic take notice:
Climate change is shrinking wetlands on China's huge Qinghai-Tibet plateau that are vital to regulating the flow of the country's giant rivers, state media reported Monday.
The contraction of the wetlands has already led to reduced flows of the Yangtze and Yellow rivers, the China Daily newspaper said, citing a recent study.
Wetlands on the plateau have shrunk more than 10 percent overall in the past 40 years, with wetlands at the Yangtze's origin contracting an alarming 29 percent, said the report by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
About 17.5 percent of the small lakes at the Yangtze's source also have dried up, it said.
The same thing is going on here in the United States. Thousands of acres of wetlands on Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in north-central Alaska have dried up because global warming has caused the permafrost on which they sit to dry up. And when its gone the wetlands just disappear.
If you are wondering why wetlands are such a big deal, read this.
This depressing news about wetland loss is just one more reason why each and every one of us has to do everything in our power to convince Al Gore to run to win the Presidency, again, in 2008. He is the only person out there with the world wide stature to be able to make things happen to right the wrongs that have been done to the earth and its climate.
